The Communist Party concluded a meeting last week to finalize its 13th Five-Year Plan, a blueprint for economic and social development between 2016 and 2020. China 's top economic planner said on Tuesday that the country's biggest challenge in the next five years is to negotiate the middle income gap. Xu Shaoshi , chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said that China can achieve its targets set out in the country's 12th five-year plan, which runs between 2011 and 2015. He was speaking at a briefing on the country's 13th five-year plan. The United Nations, UN, Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday observed that terrorist attacks in Nigeria and some other affected countries in the world as well as other ills such countries are facing are facilitated by corruption. The UN scribe who stated this while briefing participants at the ongoing Sixth Session of the Conference of the States Parties to the UN Convention against Corruption holding in St. Petersburg, Russia asserted that other crimes, including human and illegal wildlife trafficking are also encouraged by corruption. Mr. Ban, who was represented by the Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, UNODC, Yury Fedotov, underlined that ending corruption and bribery was crucial for achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted in September by Member States to wipe out poverty, fight inequality and tackle climate change over the next 15 years.

Four persons arrested in connection with matron’s abduction in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested four persons for allegedly kidnapping a 53-year-old matron, Mrs. Eralkhuemen Unulkiere who works with Rubber Estate Nigeria Limited located at Araromi Obu in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state. Those apprehended in connection with the abduction include, Tosin Adenikiju,Abiodun Olabowale, Omoniyi Akinsoyimi and Olatunji Igbekele, Disclosing this, the state Police spokesperson, Mr Femi Joseph said the suspects made confessional statements after they were arrested and the victim rescued. According to the police spokesperson, the suspects were arrested by detectives deployed to the creek by the state police command. He noted that the victim was rescued through what he termed, “a well coordinated intelligence gathering,” adding that no ransom was paid. “The woman was rescued last night unhurt and without any ransom paid by the anti-kidnapping squad led by DSP Onabanjo Adekunle,” Joseph disclosed. The Golden Eaglets striker has netted eight times in the ongoing competition in Chile and is on course to match a record jointly held by France’s Florentine Sinama Pongolle and Souleyman Coulibally of Mali. Fatmata, who reports say is the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sierra Leone, gave the ‘startling’ revelation in Lagos, Nigeria, at The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations, SCOAN, on Sunday, 1st November, 2015. INEC clears 42 candidates for Kogi, Bayelsa governorship polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says it has cleared 42 candidates for the forthcoming governorship polls in Kogi and Bayelsa. The Kogi election is billed for Nov. 21, while the Bayelsa poll comes up on Dec. 5. The commission’s bulletin issued on Monday in Abuja, stated that the list of cleared candidates was published by INEC and signed by Farouk Usman, the commission’s acting Secretary.

80% of Nigerians must know their rights by December – NHRC

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has set for itself the target of ensuring that 80 per cent of Nigerians are aware of their fundamental human rights by the end of December, 2015. The Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Bem Angwe, made the declaration on Monday in Abuja when he received the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, Mr Mike Omeri, at the NHRC headquarters. Darkness returns as Discos ‘honeymoon’ ends.

The relative stability in power supply that greeted the emergence of the Buhari administration can now be seen as an illusory appetizer. The supply was so deceptively regular that everyone thought the long-awaited end to Nigeria’s eternal darkness had finally arrived.  The honeymoon with the power distribution companies (Discos) has ended. Dakuku Peterside, the governorship candidate for All Progressive Congress, in Rivers state, has traced the rising cases of criminality in state to the lip service paid to security and the deliberate dismantling of an Isreali-trained anti-kidnapping and anti-riot outfit setup by former governor Rotimi Amaechi.

Peterside explained that security has deteriorated in the state due to lack of support for security agencies by Governor Nyesom Wike. He alleged that the 60 security vehicles that Wike claimed his administration donated to the police and other security agencies in the state was farce and a photo trick claiming that so-called vehicles were line up for photo shoot for the cameras of journalists.
