Fight against corruption not targeted at Buhari’s opponents – Oyegun

The National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has said that there is no selective justice in the fight against corruption by the Muhammadu Buhari administration.Odigie-Oyegun told newsmen in Makurdi on Sunday that both members of the ruling APC and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) found wanting were being prosecuted by the anti-corruption agencies.

When journalists claim that it is  their exclusive preserve to set the national agenda of a nation, not many people fully appreciate the weight and significance of their claim. One politician said the other day that the agenda setting theory of the media is unrealistic in Nigeria because it is not the media but the political class that initiates and directs the course of the nation’s agenda. If indeed, national agenda refers to the predominant topic of discuss, then the politician is correct because what Nigerians are forced to discuss is set everyday by politicians. For example for the better part of last year, Nigerians were manipulated to discuss election campaigns in place of the abduction of over 200 of their young compatriots.

Rochas Okorocha has given 14-day ultimatum to recall Imo state sacked workers – CD

The Campaign for Democracy (CD) South-East Zone, has given Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo, a 14- day ultimatum to recall over 3,000 state workers he sacked recently as well as apologise to them.Zonal Chairman, Mr Uzor Uzor, who spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Enugu, said sacking the workers without just cause or explanation was uncivilised and undemocratic.

Lassa fever kills two at FMC, Asaba, Delta State

There was tension at Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, Delta State, following the death of two Lassa fever patients within four days.The development had made many of the patients and nurses to flee the hospital. Punch reports that it took the efforts of the health workers at the FMC to remove the bodies of the two patients, who reportedly died of the disease.

Babangida community attack by Boko Haram again

Boko Haram insurgents invaded Babangida town, Tarmowa local government area of Yobe State, early Sunday.The sect members were, however, chased away by vigilant soldiers. A resident of the town, Sulaiman Khalil said that the assailants parked their vehicles at the outskirt and sneaked into town on foot and motorcycles.

Leicester City go top, Southampton stun Manchester United

Leicester City returned to the top of the Premier League – at least for 24 hours – after a comprehensive 3-0 win over Stoke City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday. Daniel Drinkwater, Jamie Vardy and Jose Leonardo Ulloa scored for Claudio Ranieri’s men, overtaking Arsenal who welcome Chelsea on Sunday afternoon to the Emirates. Manchester City failed to add pressure on the Gunners, after they were held to a 2-2 draw at West Ham, with Sergio Aguero equalizing twice for the Etihad club. Charlie Austin scored a late winner on his debut, as Southampton defeated Manchester United at Old Trafford. Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 3-1, while there were no goals between West Brom and Aston Villa. Liverpool emerged winners in a nine-goal thriller at Carrow Road, beating Norwich City 5-4.

Mourinho wrote six-page letter to Manchester United

Jose Mourinho is so desperate to become the next Manchester United manager, that he has written a six-page letter to the club, vowing to adhere by their principles.Mourinho has been out of job, since he was sacked by Roman Abramovich last year and is keen to manage another Premier League club again. However, there is a considerable percentage of people at United, who are not looking in his direction, because of his controversial personality, his style of football and failure to nurture young talents. The Red Devils are still struggling for creativity and form, with speculation increasing that current boss, Louis van Gaal, could quit the club at the end of the season. Mourinho has now attempted to make himself a leading candidate, by writing to the club, in which he detailed how much he wants the job.

Democracy cannot survive if individuals, institutions disregard rule of law – Ekweremadu

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has said that no democracy in the world could survive without strict adherence to the rule of law.This is contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Uche Anichukwu and issued to newsmen on Saturday in Abuja. According to the statement, Ekweremadu made the remark at a dinner organised by the International Law Institute (ILI), Washington DC, for its alumni in Nigeria. He noted that no country could experience meaningful development without the rule of law.
