  Vincent Obetta, the lawyer to the embattled Nnamdi Kanu, founder of Radio Biafra, has described the continued detention of the IPOB leader as illegal. Obetta said the action had taken Nigeria back to the military era. Speaking with Punch on Friday, Obetta said that the fact that a court order for Kanu’s unconditional release had been ignored by federal authorities brought back memories of a time when people were detained indefinitely.

Suicide bombers plan to disguise as beggars – Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army has warned Nigerians, especially residents of Maiduguri to be wary of suicide bombers who would disguise as beggars to cause mayhem. In a press statement issued by Colonel Mustapha Anka, the Media Coordinator of Operation LAFIYA DOLE, he said attention “has been drawn to terrorists intention to use beggars to cause mayhem, conceal explosive in bundles of firewood to be placed in crowded and strategic areas within Maiduguri and environs.

Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu on Thursday said he remains the governor of Abia State despite the ruling of the Court of Appeal, Owerri Division, nullifying his election and declaring Dr. Alex Otti as the validly elected candidate for the April 11, 2015 election. The Court of Appeal on Thursday said Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party was not validly elected and as such nullified his election. The Court said Otti, the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, won the larger number of votes from the election and as such declared him the winner.

Dasuki begs Buhari to allow him enjoy bail

Embattled former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), has pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to allow him enjoy the bail granted him by the Federal High Court in Abuja. He spoke a day after Buhari had in his first presidential media chat declared that Dasuki and Kanu could not be released because they would jump bail considering that the charges against them were serious. But reacting to the President’s remark, in an interview with Daily Sun, counsel to Dasuki, Alhaji Ahmed Raji SAN, said: “I would want to appeal to Mr. President to please allow my client to enjoy the bail that was granted to him. I want to beg him in the name of God. I cannot join words with the president. I have the greatest respect for him, both in his official and personal capacities. My appeal is just that I am begging him in the name of God to allow my client to enjoy his bail.”

Jubilation in Taraba as Appeal Court upholds Ishaku’s election

  There was jubilation across Taraba following the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja which upheld the election of Gov Darius Ishaku in April. As the news filtered in that the governor won at the court, supporters in his home town, Takum and across other towns like Chanchanji, Wukari and Zing, took to the streets in celebration. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) observed that there was no celebration of any kind in Jalingo as the town was very calm with people going about their normal businesses.

Lagos Assembly approves N662.588bn 2016 budget

The Lagos State House of Assembly yesterday passed into law the N662.588 billion Year 2016 Appropriation Bill presented by the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on December 17, 2015. The Appropriation Bill, tagged “The Peoples Budget,” is the highest in the history of the State and it was an improvement on the N489.69bn appropriated for year 2014 and 2015 respectively. The House unanimously approved the budget after members deliberated on the report of House Committee on Budget which scrutinized the Bill as proposed by the Governor. The report was presented by Chairman of the House Committee on Budget, Hon. Rotimi Olowo on behalf of members of the Committee.

Trailer crushes woman to death in Osogbo

An aged woman was crushed to death while scores were injured as a trailer loaded with goods rammed into fleet of vehicles along Oke-Fi/ Ilobu road on Wednesday in Osogbo, Osun state. Eyewitnesses’ account revealed that the trailer driver had lost control of the vehicle owing to break failure while trying to descend the hilly part of the road at Old NEPA junction in the area before it rammed into other vehicles from behind.

Fire guts student hostel in Bauchi

A fire outbreak yesterday night razed a student hostel known as Malisia lodge at Gwalameji area, a suburb of Bauchi metropolis. Though no life was lost because many of the occupants of the lodge travelled for the Christmas festivities, they lost all their belongings to the fire. It was gathered that the fire which started around 2 am completely destroyed all the rooms in the hostel and it lasted for several hours before the arrival of the officials of Fire Service who came to put out the fire.

Dasukigate: EFCC arrests serving colonel

 The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,  Monday night, arrested a serving colonel in the Nigerian Army over his alleged involvement in the sharing of money from the office of the National Security Adviser under Colonel Sambo Dasuki . The arrest saw the anti graft agency deploying over two truckloads of  armed security personnel, who cordoned off the the residence of the colonel in the Apo district of the Federal Capital Territory where the operatives had to bring down the fence to gain entrance into the sprawling complex.

Two arrested over stolen 33,000 litres of petrol

Two suspected vandals, Moshood Jibril and Joseph Friday, were yesterday arrested, by men of the Inspector General of Police Special Task Force on Pipeline Vandalism, in Lagos while a tanker truck with 33000 litres of stolen Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, commonly called petrol and a Toyota Corola saloon car were recovered.

President Muhammadu Buhari has assented to the 2015 Supplementary Appropriation Act, just as he extended the 2015 financial year to March 31, 2016 The implication of the extension is that the 2015 budget would be effective till March 31, 2016, after which the implementation of the 2016 budget can begin. The Supplementary Appropriation Bill of N465.64 billion, which the president submitted to the National Assembly on November 8 for consideration, was passed by the legislature on Tuesday, December 22,  before it embarked on the on-going break.

N1.04trn fine: We expect no operation disruptions for not paying fine —MTN

M TN Nigeria has said it did not expect any service disruption on its network as deadline for payment of   N1.04 trillion fine, later reduced to N780 billion by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC,  expired yesterday. The fine, which according to NCC, was against the inability of MTN to disconnect about 5.1 million subscribers allegedly not properly registered on its network in August and September 2015, was meant to be paid on or before December 31, 2015.
